Getting Started with Hospice

Getting started can be as easy as picking up the phone and calling us; we will take it from there. We can visit with you directly about our services or even send one of our nurses to your home to visit with you and your family while you are making a decision about your care. We will visit with the patient and their caregiver/spouse/healthcare proxy to explain what services we can offer. Physicians, doctor’s offices, and hospitals will also call to refer patients to us when they recognize that a patient might be ready for hospice care.

Once the patient has consented to services with Miller Hospice, a team made up of a doctor, nurse, certified nurse aide, medical social worker, and chaplain will be in service to that patient and their family. You will quickly learn that our program is designed to not only care for the patient but also to help the family understand everything that is going on and how they can best be of help to their loved one. Intermittent visits by each discipline will be scheduled by each of them.

Miller Hospice provides care to anyone facing a serious life-limiting illness, but that does not mean a person must be close to death to be admitted into our service. A hospice-appropriate patient is defined as someone with a life expectancy of six months or less; however, it is not unusual for some of our patients to live longer than six months.

If you think your loved one can benefit from our service, feel free to call and talk to one of our experts, and we will walk with you through the process. Simply contact us and we will get the process started. Calling is not a commitment but rather a conversation about your options.

As a Miller Hospice patient, can I choose to stop receiving services?

Yes. Sometimes a patient’s health improves or their illness goes into remission. Your physician or our Medical Director may feel that you no longer qualify for our care. Also, as a Miller Hospice patient, you may choose to stop receiving care for any reason.

If you stop your care, you will receive the type of insurance coverage that you had before electing Miller Hospice such as the Original Medicare or Medicaid Plan or a Medicare+Choice Plan. If you are eligible, you can return, electing to receive care from Miller Hospice at any time.
